I began knitting scarves with the basic garter stitch, knitting every row (on straight needles). It took me quite a while to realize it can also be preformed by purling every row. Once I got better with my technique I decided to make hand-warmers to help me keep my hands warm. This is what got me into knitting in the round using double point needles. I had received a few patterns for hand-warmers, but none of them really worked for me because they didn't quite fit. This drove me nuts until I realized I needed to do ribbing on them. Ribbing is preformed by alternating knit stitches with purl stitches to form vertical bars which pull the knitting tighter and is generally used for wrists and edges to get things to fit. I decided knitting my hand-warmers entirely in the rib stitch would make them fit better. You can pick a gauge that works best for you, but I tend to do 36 stitches on size 6 double pointed needles with worsted weight yarn. I created a pattern with holes for the thumbs and pinky finger so I could use my pinky while keeping my fingers warm. I came up with this pattern, and on some of them, I added frills onto the bottom of them just because it seemed like it would be fun. One pair of them I added a crocheted flower to and used a yarn needle to sew in an accent piece. These are a really quick knit and you can make them as long or as short as you want and they will form fit your hands. You can make matching hats by doing ribbing in the round and adding on the same flower accents (and depending on the person the hat is for, frills). These are easy quick and simple ways of making hats as long as you have your gauge down.
